About this interactive
The Patch Management lesson uses four phases.
Planning: research the machines and the patches (will they need downtime?), schedule the maintenance window, notify users early and often, audit the machines so none is missed, and write a rollback plan.
Testing: try the patches before they reach everyone. In a small shop that can be one admin's own machine; for a large estate or a production system, a test environment, or a staged rollout through development, test and staging that also rehearses the rollout itself.
Deployment: roll the tested patches out to the rest of the environment, with a tool such as WSUS.
Validation: verify that the patches went on everywhere and the systems are working, for example by checking the deployment tool's reports or the inventory afterwards.
A machine audit happens twice in spirit: before, to know what to patch (planning), and after, to see what was patched (validation). A quick test for each card: is it before anything is installed, a trial run, the real rollout, or a check afterwards?
