About this interactive
Large OSPF networks are split into areas so each one does less work:
- **Area 0** is the backbone, and every other area attaches to it. A network with one area should use area 0.
- Link-state advertisements flood **within an area**, so a change in one area is recalculated there, and databases stay smaller.
- **Area border routers (ABRs)** have interfaces in more than one area, keep a database for each, and act as the gateway between them.
- An ABR can **summarize** its area, here 10.1.0.0/16, so other areas carry one route instead of many, and a LAN going up or down inside the summary is not sent beyond the area.
In this network each ABR summarizes its area, as the lesson describes.
