About this interactive
The TCP/IP model has four layers, and each matches one or more OSI layers:
Application: OSI layers 7, 6 and 5. HTTP, for example, is just an application layer protocol with no separate presentation or session layer, as is true of most protocols in use today.
Transport: OSI layer 4, unchanged. TCP and UDP, port numbers, segments.
Internet: OSI layer 3, the network layer, renamed. IPv4, IPv6 and ICMP; IP addressing and routing.
Network access: OSI layers 2 and 1, data link and physical. Ethernet spans both, as do the other IEEE 802 standards such as Wi-Fi: MAC addresses, frames, signals and the preamble. RFC 1122 calls this the link layer.
The OSI model is still worth knowing: some protocols, especially older ones, follow its separate layers, and its layer numbers are used everywhere. The TCP/IP model fits the protocols most networks run today.
