About this interactive

N is the number of components the job needs. N+1 runs one more than that, N+2 two more, N+3 three more, and N+N a duplicate of everything. The lesson's car needs four tires (N = 4) and carries one spare (+1). Two web servers needed, plus a third, is N+1. Five servers with five more on standby is N+N. A spare does not have to sit idle. Two servers can each take half the load as N+1, so you know both work, and when one fails the other takes all of it. How far to go is a business call: more spares cost more, and the more downtime would cost the business, the more redundancy it pays for.
