Build the Multicast MAC Address

From a multicast IP address to its MAC address: the fixed prefix, then the last 23 bits.

About this interactive

From the lesson: - **The first 25 bits are fixed:** 01-00-5E (24 bits) marks the address as multicast, and the bit after it is always 0. - **The last 23 bits come from the IP address:** they match the multicast IP address's last 23 bits one for one. So the IP address's third and fourth octets become the MAC's fifth and sixth octets unchanged. The IP's second octet becomes the MAC's fourth octet with its first bit dropped (that bit is the fixed 0). Convert each octet to hex four bits at a time, as in MAC Addresses.

Key terms

Multicast MAC Address
A MAC address beginning with the fixed prefix 01:00:5E, where the last 23 bits map directly to the corresponding multicast IP address to identify multicast group traffic.
Multicast
A transmission type in which data is sent from one source to a specific group of devices that have subscribed to a multicast group address, rather than to all devices or just one. This differs from broadcast (all devices) and unicast (one device).
Hexadecimal
Hex
A base-16 number system using digits 0–9 and letters A–F; each hex digit maps to exactly 4 bits, making it a compact shorthand for representing binary data.
MAC Address
A 48-bit hardware address assigned to a network interface and written as six hexadecimal octets, such as 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E. It identifies a device uniquely on a local network segment, and switches forward frames by looking it up in their MAC address table.
IP Address
A numerical label assigned to each device connected to a network that uses the Internet Protocol.
