About this interactive
Total downtime does not tell the whole story: one long outage and many short ones can add up to the same number. The lesson adds two measures.
Time to recover (TTR) is how long one failure takes to fix. Mean means average, so mean time to recovery (MTTR) adds up the recovery times and divides by how many there were. The R can stand for recovery, repair or restore, depending on the source.
Time between failures is how long the system runs from coming back up until it fails again. Mean time between failures (MTBF) averages those running times. A high MTBF means failures are rare; a low MTTR means they are fixed fast.
The lesson warns that sources define MTBF differently. Some measure from one failure to the next, downtime included, and call the running time alone time to failure (MTTF). These questions use the lesson's first definition, running time only. Whichever you use, the lesson's rule is to use it consistently. Security+ lists both MTTR and MTBF in business impact analysis.
