About this interactive
Firewalls, servers, endpoints, IDS and IPS, antivirus, EDR, DLP and the SIEM all log events. The lesson works through three problems that follow.
First, the logs are scattered. In an incident nobody wants to sign in to every device. A log aggregation server takes all the logs in one place (log ingestion) and normalizes them so different formats can be searched together.
Second, once the logs sit side by side, their timestamps have to agree, or events land in the wrong order and an attack's timeline cannot be rebuilt. Setting clocks by hand drifts. Network Time Protocol has every device check one time server so the clocks, and so the logs, line up.
Third, each device has a logging level. A low level records everything, which gives the most visibility and costs the most processing and storage. A high level records only serious events, which is cheap but can miss what you need. Fix too much or too little by changing the level.
Syslog is the usual protocol for shipping the events to the central server.
