About this interactive

Lighting does two jobs. Video surveillance cannot pick up what you need to act on without proper lighting, and a well-lit place deters people, because bad things happen in dark places, as in the lesson's parking garage. A motion detector detects whether someone is walking through an area and triggers an alert or a response. It is often coupled with lighting, so a floodlight comes on when someone walks past: a deterrent, and a way to know someone is there. So the two fix different problems. If people cannot be seen, or the dark gives them cover, the fix is light. If nobody finds out that someone is there at all, the fix is a motion detector. To sort a card, ask whether the problem is seeing or knowing.
