About this interactive
A backup holds data that could do harm in the wrong hands, so plan how it is treated after it is taken.
A retention period is how long you keep something after you record it. Some customers want years of backups so they can ask for old data back; one of the lesson's clients wanted about ten years. Others want their data removed when they stop being customers, and in some industries that is required. Set retention periods that follow compliance rules and customer demands.
Once the period is over, dispose of the media properly: through a disposal service, or yourself, by drilling or another method that suits the material.
