About this interactive
A plan nobody has tested will have steps that do not work, or steps in the wrong order. Testing finds them, and testing the people shows whether they know what to do.
The lesson names three approaches:
- A tabletop or walkthrough exercise gets everyone involved around a table to walk through the procedures against a scenario, such as someone stealing data. Nothing is run; people talk it through.
- A parallel processing test brings the recovery systems up and runs them alongside production, without cutting anyone over to them, so production keeps serving the whole time.
- A live environment test runs the procedures against production itself. It is the most realistic and the most disruptive.
The video describes its parallel processing test as running the procedures on a staging, development or virtual system instead of production. Security+ calls a run on a stand-in environment like that a simulation, and keeps parallel processing for the real recovery systems run beside production, which is how this set uses it.
Security+ lists tabletop exercises, failover, simulation and parallel processing as ways to test resilience and recovery. A quick test for each card: is anything run at all, and if so, are people really moved onto it?
