About this interactive
From the lessons:
| Method | A | O | M | Address from | Other settings from |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| SLAAC only | 1 | 0 | 0 | The host | The advertisement |
| SLAAC with stateless DHCPv6 | 1 | 1 | 0 | The host | A DHCPv6 server |
| Stateful DHCPv6 | 0 | 0 | 1 | A DHCPv6 server, which records it | A DHCPv6 server |
Every method starts with a router solicitation and advertisement, and the default gateway always comes from the router advertisement. The DHCPv6 messages are Solicit, Advertise, Request and Reply; the video calls the first one a discovery. In the stateless case the host only needs a short information request and reply.
What you'll learn
- Identify the IPv6 address assignment method from the router advertisement flags (A, O and M) or from what hosts do: SLAAC only, SLAAC with stateless DHCPv6, or stateful DHCPv6
- Explain that the router advertisement supplies the default gateway in every method, and that only stateful DHCPv6 assigns and records addresses

Key terms
- Stateless Address Autoconfiguration
SLAAC
- An IPv6 mechanism that allows devices to automatically generate a globally unique IPv6 address using the network prefix from a Router Advertisement combined with a locally generated interface identifier, without requiring a DHCP server. SLAAC uses the EUI-64 process or a random interface ID to create the host portion of the address.
- Stateless DHCPv6
- A DHCPv6 mode in which the server provides supplemental configuration information such as DNS server addresses but does not assign or track IPv6 addresses; clients generate their own addresses via SLAAC.
- Stateful DHCPv6
- A DHCPv6 mode in which the server assigns and tracks IPv6 addresses from a defined prefix pool in addition to providing other configuration parameters.
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol version 6
DHCPv6
- An extension of DHCP for IPv6 networks that provides stateful IPv6 address assignment and delivers configuration options such as DNS server addresses to IPv6 clients. DHCPv6 can operate alongside SLAAC to supply options that Router Advertisements cannot carry.
- Neighbor Discovery Protocol
NDP
- An IPv6 protocol that replaces ARP and handles router discovery, address autoconfiguration, and address resolution on local links.
