About this interactive

Every device on these cards is connected, so being online does not decide anything. The Internet of Things is everyday things that traditionally were not networked and now are, connected to add features: refrigerators, microwaves, outlets, garage doors, door locks, doorbells, TVs and streaming sticks, cameras, speakers and thermostats. A traditional computer, such as a laptop, desktop or server, has been connected for a long time. People buy computers largely for their connectivity, so the lesson does not count them as IoT. To sort a card, ask what the thing was before it had a network connection. If it was an appliance or a household object, it is IoT. If it was always a computer, it is not. This matters for security because IoT devices are now on the network too, and each one has to be managed and kept updated.
