About this interactive
The lesson draws two lines:
- **Not IoT:** a laptop, desktop, tablet or server. Computers have been networked for a long time; that is what we buy them for.
- **Home IoT:** everyday things that were not networked and now are, for home automation. The lesson's house is full of them: an Alexa microwave, smart outlets, the garage door, a deadbolt, a Ring doorbell, smart TVs and streaming sticks, Echo Dots and an ecobee thermostat.
- **Industrial control:** industry automated its equipment long before homes did. Industrial control systems run factory floors and plants; SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) uses sensors to gather data and makes control decisions from it.
