About this interactive

A security guard is both preventive and a deterrent. A guard can stop someone entering an area, and most people will not even try, because a guard is hard to trick. The guard's job is looking for people and making sure only authorized personnel get into an area, which means checking who someone is and judging whether they belong. A guard dog is both a deterrent and a way of monitoring an area. People are put off by it, and it alerts by barking when someone is in its area. A guard can deter, watch and raise the alarm too. What a dog cannot do is check a badge, read a list, ask a question, decide who is allowed in, or write down what happened. To sort a card, ask whether the job needs someone to judge who is authorized. If it only needs deterring, watching and raising the alarm, a guard dog can do it.
