About this interactive
From the lesson:
- A switch and a router each do one specific job. **Gateway** describes a type of equipment: a translator between protocols.
- The best example is a router at the edge: Ethernet on the LAN side, a T1, DSL or cable connection on the other.
- A **modem** (modulator-demodulator) translates between two protocols. A **voice gateway** gives VoIP phones access to voice services. A **wireless LAN controller** sits between the wireless network and the wired one. A **firewall** that does the router's job at the edge counts too.
Ask: is the device going from one technology or protocol to a different one?
What you'll learn
- Decide whether a device is working as a gateway, translating between different protocols or network technologies, or forwarding within one technology, as a switch, hub, repeater or bridge does
- Recognise the devices the lesson names as gateways: an edge router, a modem, a voice gateway, a wireless LAN controller and a firewall that routes

Key terms
- Gateway
- A network node that connects two networks using different protocols, translating between them.
- Modem
- A device that modulates and demodulates signals to translate between different transmission protocols, enabling communication between a local network and an external service such as DSL or cable.
- Voice Gateway
- A network device that translates between Voice over IP (VoIP) protocols and traditional telephony protocols to provide voice services on a network.
- Wireless LAN Controller
WLC
- A network device that provides centralized management of multiple lightweight wireless access points, handling functions such as client authentication, roaming, radio frequency management, and security policy enforcement. WLCs communicate with APs using CAPWAP and allow network-wide wireless configuration from a single management point.
- Protocol
- A set of rules governing the format and transmission of data between devices.
