Frequency or Amplitude?

A higher note, a louder one, AM radio, FM radio: did the frequency change or the amplitude?

About this interactive

Two of the things you can control about a wave (phase, the third, is not in this lesson): - **Frequency:** cycles per second, in hertz (Hz). One cycle is a full swing out, back in and home again. Higher frequency, higher pitch; lower frequencies travel farther and through more obstacles. Frequency modulation (FM) carries data by varying it. - **Amplitude:** the size of each cycle. With sound, it is loudness: the same note, louder or quieter. Amplitude modulation (AM) carries data by varying it. Electromagnetic waves are not mechanical, but they behave the same way.

Key terms

Frequency
A measurement of cycles per second, expressed in hertz (Hz), that determines the behavior and application of a wave signal.
Amplitude
The magnitude or strength of a wave signal, representing how loud or powerful the wave is independent of its frequency.
Amplitude Modulation
AM
A method of transmitting data by varying the amplitude of an electromagnetic wave while keeping the frequency constant.
Frequency Modulation
FM
A method of transmitting data by varying the frequency of an electromagnetic wave while keeping the amplitude constant.
