Which Generation Does It Take?

Block TCP 23, let a reply in because a PC asked for it, catch SSH on port 443, find a virus inside a download: what is the least advanced firewall that can do each?

About this interactive

Firewalls are usually told as generations. The first, stateless, works like a router with rules: it checks every packet on its own against addresses and ports. The second, stateful, tracks each conversation, so it can let replies in because someone inside asked for them and drop packets that do not fit. Sources differ on what comes next: some count application-layer firewalls, which check that the application protocol is what the port claims, as generation three and next-generation firewalls as four; others call NGFW the third. The term next-generation firewall came from Gartner, coined after the fact to name what firewalls had become. Its clearest mark is deep packet inspection, looking into the data itself. Because of when it was coined, an NGFW usually brings anti-malware, VPN, intrusion prevention, web and spam filtering and data loss prevention too, which makes it very close to a UTM. Each later generation can do what the earlier ones did. So for any job, ask what the least it takes is: the headers alone, a memory of the conversation, the application protocol, or a look inside the data.

Key terms

Next-Generation Firewall
NGFW
A Next-Generation Firewall is an advanced network security device that combines traditional stateful packet inspection with application awareness, deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, and threat intelligence to control traffic at Layer 7.
Stateless Firewall
A firewall that filters packets based solely on static rules without tracking connection state.
Stateful Firewall
A firewall that tracks the state of active network connections and makes filtering decisions based on context.
Application Layer Filtering
A firewall capability that inspects traffic beyond Layer 3 and Layer 4 headers to identify and verify the actual application protocol in use, preventing adversaries from bypassing rules through port misuse.
Deep Packet Inspection
DPI
Deep Packet Inspection is a network traffic analysis technique that examines packet payloads beyond the header layer, enabling content-aware filtering, intrusion detection, and application identification.
Unified Threat Management
UTM
Unified Threat Management is a network security solution that consolidates multiple security functions including firewall, intrusion detection, antivirus, content filtering, and VPN into a single appliance or platform.
