About this interactive

Location redundancy means a second place to run from if the first is lost. Copies in many places get costly, so the second site is chosen by how ready it has to be. A hot site has all its servers and all the data live. All that is needed is to send customers there instead, and it becomes the live site. Keeping it current takes constant connection and bandwidth, so it is the most expensive option and the fastest. A warm site has servers set up and ready, but the data is not populated. A backup copy is kept there, or shipped there, and restored onto the servers before they go live. A cold site is an idea of how to set up somewhere else, perhaps a space to use, but without the equipment or the data. Equipment has to be brought in and the data restored. It is the cheapest option and the slowest. The faster the business needs to be back, the warmer the site it needs, and the more it costs.

Key terms

Hot Site
A fully operational duplicate facility with live systems and current data that can immediately assume workloads if the primary site fails, providing the fastest possible disaster recovery time.
Warm Site
A partially equipped recovery site with some infrastructure and recent data copies that requires additional setup before becoming operational, balancing cost and recovery speed.
Cold Site
A recovery site with little to no pre-installed equipment or live data that can take days to become operational but carries the lowest ongoing cost.
Location Redundancy
The practice of distributing duplicate systems or services across geographically separate sites to protect against localized failures or disasters.
Failover
The automatic switching to a redundant system or component when the primary one fails.
Redundancy
The duplication of critical components or systems to increase reliability and availability.
