About this interactive

What you are doing: naming the emotion that each lure uses to get you to act. The lesson’s emotions. Curiosity: you want to know who, what or why, so you click to find out. Helpfulness: someone, often posing as a boss or colleague, needs a favour, and you want to help. Greed or desire: a prize, a refund, money or a deal you want. Fear: a threat of exposure, arrest, a closed account or lost files. Urgency: the lesson says most scammers add a deadline or scarcity (now, today, only a few left) on top of the emotion, because people act before thinking. Nearly every card here has some urgency, so look past it to the emotion underneath. The defence is the same for all of them: slow down, and ask whether the message makes sense.
