About this interactive
From the lesson (RFC 2131 names the same three):
- **Dynamic:** the device asks and gets any free address in the scope, for a limited lease. When the lease runs out, the address goes back to the pool.
- **Automatic:** the server gives a device an address the first time it connects and records its MAC, so it gets the same address every time after. The lesson calls it an automatic reservation: the server makes it, not an admin.
- **Manual (reserved):** an admin finds the device's MAC address and enters the address it must always get. A printer or a server is a typical case.

Explain the role of DHCP and DNS within the network
Key terms
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
DHCP
- A network protocol that automatically assigns IP addresses and other configuration parameters to devices on a network.
- DHCP Reservation
- A manual DHCP allocation that permanently assigns a specific IP address to a device based on its MAC address, ensuring it receives the same address each time it connects.
- DHCP Lease
- The amount of time a client is permitted to use an IP address assigned by a DHCP server before it must be renewed or released.
- DHCP Scope
- The defined pool of IP addresses that a DHCP server is configured to assign to clients on a specific subnet, along with associated options such as the subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers. Each subnet served by a DHCP server has its own scope.
- MAC Address
- A 48-bit hardware address assigned to a network interface and written as six hexadecimal octets, such as 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E. It identifies a device uniquely on a local network segment, and switches forward frames by looking it up in their MAC address table.
