About this interactive

There is no single best deployment model. Bare metal, virtualization, on-premises, colocation, IaaS, PaaS and SaaS each fit some situations, and most organizations end up with a mix. Choosing takes weighing the same considerations each time. Cost and licensing: what it costs now and over the years, whether you rent or buy, and whether a license is bought up front or paid for over time. Security and data protection: who controls the encryption keys, whether deleted data really goes, whether shared hardware can leak data, and whether storage is left open. Regulations and compliance: whether a provider or a location lets you follow the laws you are bound by, including laws on where data may be kept. Scalability: whether the design keeps up as demand grows. Availability and performance: whether it stays up, and how long users wait. Location runs through several of these. Overseas may be cheaper, a law may keep data in the country, and distance adds delay. Leadership's readiness to adopt the cloud matters too. To sort a card, ask what the person asking is worried about.

Key terms

Data Sovereignty
The concept that data is subject to the laws and regulations of the geographic region in which it originates or is collected.
Scalability
The ability of a system to handle increased load by adding resources without degrading performance.
Latency
The time delay between sending a request and receiving a response over a network.
Data Remanence
The residual representation of data that remains on storage media after deletion or overwriting attempts, which may allow recovery by unauthorized parties.
Key Management
The administration of cryptographic keys throughout their lifecycle, including generation, storage, distribution, and destruction, to ensure secure cryptographic operations.
High Availability
HA
High Availability describes systems designed to operate continuously with minimal downtime, achieved through redundancy, failover clustering, and load balancing to meet the Availability pillar of the CIA triad.
Total Cost of Ownership
TCO
The comprehensive assessment of all direct and indirect costs associated with acquiring, deploying, maintaining, and decommissioning an IT asset over its lifetime.
