About this interactive

Unit literacy is the quiet prerequisite for reading almost any spec sheet in IT: a drive capacity, a RAM figure, an internet plan, a file size in a transfer dialog. All four are counts of bits, and the only thing separating them is which unit the number was dressed in. This drill converts across the full ladder — bits, nibbles, bytes, then kilo, mega, giga and tera — and states the convention on every question, because the SI step of 1,000 and the binary step of 1,024 give different answers to the same question. It also keeps the lowercase b and the uppercase B apart, so a 100 Mbps connection resolving to a 12.5 MB/s download stops being a surprise. You type every answer rather than picking one, and a miss shows the arithmetic, not just the number.

Key terms

Bit
Short for binary digit, the smallest unit of data in computing, holding a single value of 0 or 1; all digital information is ultimately composed of bits.
Nibble
A group of exactly 4 bits, equivalent to one hexadecimal digit; two nibbles make up one byte.
Byte
A group of 8 bits; the standard unit for representing a single character or small value in computing, and the building block for larger storage measurements such as kilobytes and gigabytes.
Kilobyte
KB
A unit of digital storage equal to one thousand bytes (or 1,024 bytes in binary contexts), used to describe small files, memory allocations, and data packet sizes.
Megabyte
MB
A unit of digital storage equal to one million bytes, commonly used to measure document and image file sizes, RAM amounts, and software installation sizes.
Gigabyte
GB
A unit of digital storage equal to one billion bytes (1,000 megabytes), widely used to measure file sizes, RAM capacity, and storage drive capacity.
Terabyte
TB
A unit of digital storage equal to 2^40 bytes (approximately 1,000 gigabytes). A common capacity denomination for hard drives and solid-state drives.
SI (International System of Units)
SI
A standardized decimal-based measurement system that defines unit prefixes such as kilo, mega, and giga as powers of 1,000, used globally for measuring digital storage and data transmission rates.
Binary Prefix
A unit prefix system based on powers of 1,024 rather than 1,000, used to measure digital storage quantities such as kibibytes and gibibytes.
Kibibyte
KiB
A binary prefix unit of digital storage equal to 1,024 bytes, as defined by the IEC in 1998 to distinguish from the SI kilobyte of 1,000 bytes.
Gibibyte
GiB
A binary prefix unit of digital storage equal to 1,024 mebibytes, distinguished from the SI gigabyte of 1,000,000,000 bytes.
Megabit per second
Mbps
A data transfer rate equal to one million bits per second, the standard unit for rating broadband internet connections and network interface speeds.
Bits Per Second
BPS
A fundamental unit of data transfer rate measuring how many binary digits are transmitted or received in one second; larger prefixed units (Kbps, Mbps, Gbps) are used for faster connections.
Powers of Two
The sequence of values produced by multiplying 2 by itself a given number of times (e.g., 2¹=2 through 2⁸=256), which appear frequently in computing contexts such as memory and subnetting.
