About this interactive
The Data Management lesson starts from a simple point: a company keeps data because it is worth something.
Data has a primary value, the purpose it was collected for, such as the profile a member fills in so the site can match them with other people. It often has other value too: marketing and analytics, better customer support, and proof of how the business has behaved if there is ever a legal dispute.
Data also costs money and carries risk. It has to be stored and backed up, and the backups managed. Large amounts of it slow systems down and get hard to manage. If it is stolen, altered or deleted, the company may have to notify the people it was about, and depending on whose data it is, compliance duties come with it.
So data is an asset and a liability at the same time. The lesson's question is which side wins: keep it and protect it, or get rid of it. Data that still serves a purpose is worth protecting, even though a leak would hurt. Data that no longer serves any purpose is only cost and risk, so deleting it is the safer choice.
A quick test for each card: is anyone still getting value from this data?
