About this interactive
What you are doing: working out the numbers behind a CPU's specs, from the Processing Bits lesson and the CPUs, Cores, and Hyper-Threading lesson.
Clock speed: a CPU's clock is measured in hertz, cycles per second. Giga means billion, so 2.8 GHz is 2.8 billion cycles every second, and a gigahertz is 1,000 megahertz.
Bit width: a 64-bit processor works on 64 bits at a time, which is 8 bytes; a 32-bit one works on 32. The 1983 NES was 8-bit; most computers and consoles now are 64-bit.
Threads at once: each core takes one thread, and hyper-threading (simultaneous multithreading, SMT, on other makers' chips) lets a core take a couple. So threads at once = CPUs × cores per CPU, × 2 with hyper-threading. The lesson's server, 4 CPUs of 30 cores, has 120 cores; with hyper-threading, 240 threads.
How to use it: type a number only. Commas are fine.
