About this interactive
The CIA triad is three questions to ask about any data you care about.
Confidentiality: can the wrong people see it? A bank password should stay hidden. Access control (permissions) and encryption protect confidentiality, and so does destroying an old drive properly before it leaves your hands.
Integrity: is it still accurate and unchanged? Financial records you make decisions from must not change on their own. Comparing two copies, parity bits and hashing algorithms are ways to check integrity.
Availability: is it there when you need it? A rewards number is no use if it will not come up at the checkout. Redundancy (a mirrored drive, a second power supply, a second site), backups, replication and RAID keep data available when a part fails.
To sort a safeguard, ask what it is for. Two copies kept so one can fail are for availability; two copies compared to see whether they still match are an integrity check.
