About this interactive
There are two ways to put a cloud access security broker to work.
Inline, the CASB acts as a proxy. Users connect to the CASB instead of connecting to the applications directly, so all of their traffic passes through it and can be analyzed: which apps are used and what goes into them. Because the data passes through the broker before it reaches the cloud, inline is more secure, but the extra step can add delay.
Out of band, users connect directly to the cloud services. On the back end, the broker plugs into each service through its API and monitors what happens there. If someone uploads a document they should not, the API catches it and the broker acts. There is no middle step, so performance is better, but it is less secure: the data can reach the cloud before the API catches it.
To sort a card, ask whether the broker stands in the users' path or watches the service from the side.
