About this interactive
Bring your own device has a security problem: company data ends up on a laptop or phone the company does not own. If the employee is fired, or the phone is lost, that data goes with it. The lesson names two technologies that make BYOD more acceptable.
Remote wipe through mobile device management: the device is enrolled in MDM, and the user agrees that company data on it can be erased. If it is lost, stolen or its owner leaves, the company wipes it when it next connects. A selective wipe removes only the company's data. This fits when the data has to be on the device, for example to work with no connection.
A virtual desktop: the user logs in to a virtual machine on company servers and does everything there. The data never leaves the company, and nothing has to be installed to manage the personal device. It needs a connection.
To sort a card, ask whether the company data has to live on the device.
