About this interactive
Four lessons in Working with Web Browsers each end on a setting, and each setting fixes a different problem.
Cookies and Caches. Cookies remember things like your cart and your sign-in; the cache keeps a site's files, like pictures. When a site changes and shows up broken or blank, old cookies or cached files are a common cause, and clearing them (Privacy and security, Delete browsing data) is a standard fix. Clearing cookies signs you out; clearing cached files makes pictures download again.
Password Management. The browser's own password manager (Autofill and passwords) is fine for sites that would not matter much if compromised. For sensitive accounts like your bank, the lesson says use a separate password manager, such as KeePass.
Pop-Up Blockers. Chrome's default is not to let sites send pop-ups or use redirects. When a site you trust needs pop-ups, add just that site to the allowed list and keep the default. You can switch to allowing every site and list the ones to block, but the lesson says not to.
Extensions. An extension adds a feature the browser does not have, like dark mode for Google Docs, from the Chrome Web Store, where ratings help you choose. Disable one you want off for now; remove one you will not use again.
Read each situation and choose the fix, or what the setting will do.
