About this interactive
Uptime is a grade: the time a system was up, divided by the time it should have been up. Planned maintenance windows are left out of both. A service that should run 24 hours and is down 6 scores 18 ÷ 24 = 75%.
Mean means average. Mean time to recover (MTTR) averages how long each outage took to fix: outages of 30, 10 and 20 minutes give (30 + 10 + 20) ÷ 3 = 20 minutes.
Mean time between failures (MTBF) averages how long the system runs between failures. The lesson notes that sources measure it two ways; these questions measure from the moment service is restored to the next failure, as most sources do. Runs of 8 and 4 hours give an MTBF of 6 hours.
The lesson rounds the nines: 99.9% allows about 8.8 hours of downtime a year, and five nines about 5.3 minutes.
