About this interactive

The lesson follows one company through both models. Assigned equipment: with two thirds of staff at headquarters, IT kept equipment on hand, checked it out to each new hire and back in when they left. Everyone had the same gear, so it was easy to support, and the company did not have to buy extra. Choose your own device: when the company went fully remote, mailing equipment out and chasing it back cost more than the equipment was worth. Staff got an allowance to choose their peripherals from a recommended set, ordered online and shipped straight to them. The company paid a little more up front and had no inventory, packaging or returns to manage. More models do mean more to support. To sort a card, ask whether it makes keeping and reusing a stock of equipment easier, or harder.
